Shaking table tests of a full‐scale flat‐bottom manufactured steel silo filled with wheat: Main results on the fixed‐base configuration

This paper reports on a series of shaking table tests full-scale flat-bottom steel silo filled with soft wheat, characterized by aspect ratio around 0.9. The specimen was 3.64-m diameter and 5.50-m high corrugated-wall cylindrical silo. Multiple sensors were used to monitor the static dynamic response system, including accelerometers pressure cells. Numerous unidirectional performed consisting random signals, sinusoidal inputs, both artificial real earthquake records. objectives this are (i) provide general overview whole experimental campaign (ii) present selected results obtained for fixed-base configuration. measured data processed assess pressures, overpressures (related effective mass) accelerations monitored points wall, identify basic properties (fundamental frequency vibration, damping ratio, amplification factors) main findings discussed compared predictions given available theoretical models code provisions. It is found that fundamental slightly decreases increasing acceleration, while it increases compaction granular material. For close-to-resonance input, (in terms peak values accelerations) along height wall up 1.4 at top surface solid content. appear increase depth (differently from EN1998-4 expectations), be proportional acceleration.
